hi all, hope i didn't wake you.
it is super late on friday night. just got into champaign from wichita, ks.
last show of tour is tonight in champaign, il.
much too tell, about the last 3 weeks of shows...
here is the short of it...

played a sports bar in a strip mall in urbandale ia; needless to say 7
minutes songs about johannes gutenberg are not acceptable there...anyways, i dislike sports and hate strip malls (the death of american cities) so we shrugged our shoulders, luckily the worst show of the tour was first, was much better from then on.visited the st. paul cathedral in st. paul MN, very beautiful half-hour there amongst not so beautiful other hours. thanks to shellae for putting us up and for bringing folks to the show! good to see you in austin as well. thank you.
next was the oasis that is aberdeen south dakota. honestly, what a nice
town. tho the kiddies like their meth a bit much maybe. thank you dan, for having us play the red rooster and feeding us. kenzie thanks for taking us in. sweet milltown wi, tough show, we were competing with an ice fishing tournament that night. the owner of The Hall gave us the keys to the place, told us to tend bar, as he had to "run some errands". so we play and tend bar somehow, close up the place, then go across the street to the ice fishing party where we are accosted by dj wiggles onslaught of unacceptable songs for any situation, get drunk, go back to the venue, open up the place again and start making pizzas, the owner left the ovens on...have you ever tried to make a pizza with old dough, it was foolish. we were drunk trying to be pros throwing the pizza up in the air, one stuck in a fan, the other hit the
floor. as tim said, nothing a 500 degree oven can't cure...ahh wisdom. all the while the owner, god love him, was busy averting his ex-wife's suicide attempt. i had green pepper on my half. slept in van, was cold.
columbia mo was great, two shows that night, thanks to the folks at the
cherry street artisan. will be back soon, made some friends this time and enough gas money to get to columbus oh.next our triumphant return to fredericks music lounge in st.louis...always a good time, unlimited free beer as long as you don't lose your cup...those
cups are elusive tho as the night rolls on. played galaga furiously. played oklahoma for some folks in freds living room. thanks jim and laura for dinner and letting us sleep at the casa de playback. fred- thanks for listening, see you soon.
3/9, had to cancel in columbus due to sickness, proceeded to coffee bar to get some tea ended up playing a set there instead, yikes. they played the record all night. thanks dan erb for coming to show and putting us up. made enough $ to get to cleveland. blizzard. enough said. played with some brat punk bands; their brattiness was inversely proportionate to their abilities. had coffee for 3 hours before show. played songs fast. had fans of first record in the audience, a good crowd and our best show to date on the tour. sound man hated life but loved looking like david lee roth.
coined the phrase "club courtesy," as in "I'd like a little club courtesy."
deaf ears....next we headed to nashville and played to our largest all-ages crowd yet at the caffeine coffee bar...sold lots of small tee shirts.
3/12 nawlin's--it was, as expected, a long night. good turn out at the show at neutral ground, thanks alexis for spreading the word, another crowd familiar with first record, which was nice. ended up at lafitte's
blacksmith bar on bourbon st., past all the pirates of the carribean
bullshit. met an old blues piano player, jb with whom we sang old bb king and bobby blue bland songs. he asked tim and i to do a song, so we did, ended up playing to a gathering crowd for about a half hour. the blacksmith is the oldest bar in the U.S., built in 1722, used for smuggling back in the day, opened as a bar in 1742 i believe, looked like it too. met up with our friend jonas, who finished the tour with us. ran out of money here.pulled into a very sleepy montgomery alabama on a sunday night. thanks krist for the gas money...slept in van at a rest stop in alabama. the rest stop had a real nasa rocket/space ship next to the vending area, about like 20 stories tall. i woke up in the middle of night and thought the day of reckoning was upon us, i didn't have my glasses on and in a half sleep state wondered to the rest area building with bright parking lot street lamps shining on me, i thought i was gonna be abducted. it was very odd. dogs were barking.
next we went to baton rouge, which was a nice place, played the red star bar. comfortable little place by the river. took off for texas, slept in van at truck stop, woke up in a construction zone, it had started up around us, i thought we were being towed. left for texas.fell in love with austin as i always do. played two shows during sxsw on
wed. 3/16. got to see some old friends, thanks dave and charlie for setting up the show and offering a place to stay.
off to wichita to play kirbys, great little joint, was tough to play show
tho, b/c there was a guy who echoed every line i was singing...he didn't
know the lyrics, he would just echo the last line i sang before the
following line came. it was very annoying. he had a good heart tho. said i was his brother.got a $5 tip and a bad cough.got home to champaign, one more show tonite.send me a postcard from home next time, anyone.
xo
